A new study published in the European Journal of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Biology aimed to assess scientific evidence for management and preservation of perineal integrity during the expulsive stage of labor. This integrative review used the Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome strategy to formulate a research question – ‘Which perineal measure(s) is(are) effective in maintaining perineal integrity during labor?’. MEDLINE, LILACS, BDENF, and SciELO, were searched and 10 selected studies were analyzed based on their level of evidence and grade of recommendation. From the results, 4 categories of measures could be determined; vis, antenatal perineal care, perineal massage during the expulsive phase of labor, manual perineal support during the expulsive phase of labor, and perineal hyaluronidase injection. Hence, it was stated that based on its level of evidence, perineal massage with lubricants performed by the women or their partners at the end of pregnancy seems to be favorable for perineal protection.
